Identified needs
Vocento required a platform to guarantee Data Governance and Data Quality, enabling full knowledge of data origins for end-to-end traceability. A gradual implementation roadmap was essential, so the platform needed to be flexible, scalable and configurable. The needs were structured around three main functional areas:
-
Administrative functions: information management — business glossary, data catalog, definition of organizational units, roles, access controls and workflows.
-
Operational functions: day-to-day data operations — definition and implementation of security/privacy rules, business rules, quality rules, data traceability and identification, and change request workflows.
-
Executive functions: information visualization and reporting — information integration, quality monitors and quality remediation.
Use Case: Dashboard Governance and Data Lifecycle
The use case consists of governing two critical dashboards for Vocento and all related data assets, with the goal of testing the capabilities of Anjana Data and Omma Data (integrated quality engine), their flexibility and fit to the group's needs. This achieves a complete data lifecycle trace, from source systems all the way to dashboard consumption.
Governance of Vocento's daily operations dashboard: user registrations, subscribers, sign-ups and cancellations, newsletters and other key operational indicators for editorial business monitoring.
Governance of the “front page closing” dashboard with real-time news information for each newspaper's front page across the group, covering the full flow from source to visualization.
Implementing the use case required defining entities, organizational hierarchies, roles, permissions and approval workflows. For quality, a structure was defined for historical data, daily data and cross-load checks, automatically integrated into Anjana Data for monitoring. In addition to standard entities, the following custom non-native entities were defined and implemented:
-
Change Request · Supporting Document · Source Origin
-
Analytical Visualization Data · Analytical Visualization Process
-
Measure & Metric (KPI) · Incident · Data Visualization
Project goals
The use case developed in Anjana Data aims to provide Vocento with a platform that enables:
-
Implement governance policies and quality standards to guarantee the reliability and consistency of information across the entire organization.
-
Identify data origins used in transformation processes and track the movement of that data into the centralized DataHub for processing and consumption.
-
Guarantee data democratization and federation across Vocento, defining roles and responsibilities and equipping teams with the tools needed to fulfill them.
-
Trace the governed data lifecycle with Anjana Data, obtaining metrics and indicators for subsequent iterations on governance models and the proposed metamodel.
-
Provide data quality measurement and remediation plans with Omma Data and its integration into Anjana Data.
Functional and technical architecture
The deployed architecture integrates Anjana Data into Vocento's technology ecosystem, connecting heterogeneous data sources with the centralized DataHub and consumption tools, with Omma Data as the embedded quality engine and Anjana plugins as the cross-cutting governance layer.
Benefits obtained
Once the objectives were achieved on the Anjana Data platform, Vocento gains differentiating capabilities for intelligent information management:
Centralized definition and agile enforcement of data access policies and procedures, ensuring regulatory compliance across the entire organization.
Fully customizable governance model with technical and business assets catalogued, enabling complete lineage from data production to final consumption.
A unified view of all information in an organized manner for processing and consumption by all profiles, both technical and business users.
Vocento's data is accessible to all profiles. Proactive governance via relationship graphs enables visualization and analysis of how data flows and behaves.
Access control through a Data Marketplace. Users can subscribe to entities and access information via data contracts, like a self-service “shopping cart”.
Data quality rules execution engine integrated into Anjana Data and Vocento's ecosystem, continuously monitoring and ensuring the quality of shared information.
Challenges overcome
Both technological and functional challenges were overcome. Among the most significant:
Creating a shared environment for the coordinated deployment of Anjana Data and Omma Data on top of an existing architecture with high technological complexity.
Fully meeting all identified requirements, some of which required custom development to adapt the platform to Vocento's own processes and workflows.
Defining the foundational rules and operating procedures to begin governing information, as well as identifying and tracking data quality at all times.
Providing business users with a centralized procedure and mechanism for all change requests on dashboards (structure, dimensions, indicators, etc.).
Anjana Data has served as the catalyst for governance initiatives at Vocento. Business units have embraced the platform as a key, user-friendly tool, aligning technical and business concepts around a common language for everyone.
