Identified needs: Why a Knowledge Marketplace?
The Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones de México (IFT) faced a clear challenge: to transform access to and management of its data and information assets, starting virtually from scratch. With no prior governance structures, no centralised catalogue, and no control workflows in place, the need was urgent: to establish a comprehensive solution that would bring order, agility, and trust to data.
Yet IFT did not settle for building a traditional Data Marketplace. It took a qualitative leap by committing to the creation of its own Knowledge Marketplace — a dynamic space where organisational knowledge, not just data, becomes an accessible, governed, and reusable strategic asset.
The Knowledge Marketplace represents the natural evolution of the Data Marketplace. It is no longer solely about making data available, but about connecting that data with its context, meaning, usage policies, and application scenarios.
-
No prior governance structures — IFT was starting from zero: no centralised catalogue, no control workflows, and no defined governance roles for its data and information assets.
-
The need for usability, not just availability — The true value of data does not lie in its availability, but in its usability within a shared knowledge framework, where all user profiles can discover, understand, and use information autonomously, with full traceability and security.
-
A vision aligned with Anjana Data — A platform designed not only to govern data, but to activate organisational knowledge in its entirety.
Implemented solution
The deployment of Anjana Data at IFT focused on three strategic pillars that form the functional foundation of the Knowledge Marketplace, enabling the exposure of data, reports, and visualisations within an eCommerce-style experience that is fully self-managed and governed.
More than 130 data and information assets (tables, views, reports) were documented, enriched with metadata, tags, and classifiers that enable agile and precise discovery.
A common dictionary between IT and business was built, facilitating cross-functional understanding and eliminating barriers between technical and operational language.
Roles, responsibilities, and workflows were defined to manage the asset lifecycle, ensuring traceability, compliance, and access control.
Solution architecture
The architecture is structured in three interconnected layers: a governance layer with data domains, roles (Producers, Brokers, Consumers), and policies; a governance capabilities layer encompassing metadata and lineage, security and access control, and audit and versioning; and an integration layer that connects data sources (Oracle, SQL Server), analytics tools (Power BI), and identity systems (LDAP).
Benefits achieved
The transformation has been profound, both at an operational and cultural level. In just 10 weeks, IFT built the foundations of a smarter, better-connected organisation, fully aligned with the strategic value of data. Among the most significant benefits:
Data owners decide with whom to share information and under what conditions, through Data Sharing Agreements managed directly from the platform.
Thanks to the semantic catalogue, users can find what they need and understand it, without relying on technical intermediaries.
Barriers to information access have been reduced without sacrificing control or security, unlocking the value of data across the entire organisation.
By project close, use cases were already in production, demonstrating that the model not only works but delivers value from day one.
Challenges overcome
The journey was not without its difficulties. The key to success lay in agile and empowered project management: IFT assigned a Project Manager with the authority to unblock issues, enabling progress without friction and with fast decision-making. The expertise of Management Solutions as a certified Anjana Data implementation partner was essential in overcoming technical hurdles and accelerating adoption.
- Incompatibilities between heterogeneous systems were resolved and response times were optimised to ensure a smooth experience within the Knowledge Marketplace.
- Integration with Oracle, SQL Server, and Power BI required specific configurations that were addressed thanks to the architectural flexibility of the Anjana Data platform.
- Integration with the corporate active directory (LDAP) enabled centralised management of identities and access roles in a secure, auditable manner, aligned with corporate policies.
- Robust synchronisation workflows were designed for the existing SQL Server databases, ensuring the consistency and traceability of all catalogued assets.
- Adoption of the Knowledge Marketplace by end users required a process of training and support, ensuring that all profiles — from technical staff to business decision-makers — could extract value from day one.
- Alignment across multiple areas and units was achieved thanks to the IFT Project Manager, who acted as a bridge between the organisation and the implementation team.
An evolving project
This success story does not end here. IFT's Knowledge Marketplace is a living project that will continue to evolve throughout 2025, with new sources, integrations, and functionalities. The goal: to keep democratising access to knowledge and consolidate a mature, sustainable data-driven organisational culture.
The Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones has demonstrated that, with vision, leadership, and the right technology, it is possible to go from 0 to 200 in knowledge management. In just 10 weeks, it has built the foundations of a smarter, more connected organisation, fully aligned with the strategic value of data. This case is not only a milestone for IFT — it is a replicable example for any public or private organisation that wants to make knowledge its competitive advantage.
-
Incorporation of new data sources into the governed ecosystem, progressively expanding the coverage of the Knowledge Marketplace.
-
New integrations and functionalities to enrich the user experience and broaden the production use cases.
-
Consolidation of a data-driven culture across the organisation, making knowledge IFT's primary competitive advantage.
